If you want to hire a dhol player in the USA, the hardest part is rarely finding one. It is knowing what to ask so you do not discover problems on the day of the event. These seven questions apply whether you are planning a wedding, a sangeet, a baraat, a garba night, or a private party.
1. How Much Experience Do You Have With My Type of Event?
A dhol player who has done receptions may not have led a baraat, and a baraat player may not have worked a garba circle. Ask specifically about events like yours.
For reference, Zubair Firoz, performing as Kutchi Bollywood Dholi, lists about 25 years of experience across receptions, weddings, garba evenings, sangeet, baraat, cocktail parties, and live Bollywood music events.
What a Good Answer Sounds Like
Specific event types and, ideally, video from similar events you can watch yourself.
2. Can I See or Hear a Recent Performance?
Do not rely on a description. Ask for recent video. Watch how the player handles the crowd, not just how they play. A YouTube channel or social media gives you a quick way to judge style and energy.
3. What Exactly Is Included?
Clarify what you are paying for before you agree to anything.
- Length of the performance and any breaks
- Which instruments are played (dhol only, or others as well)
- Whether the player brings a sound setup or needs one from the venue
- Whether a second player or a DJ is involved
Some performers play more than the dhol. The instruments listed on the Kutchi Dholi site include dhol, roto drums, cajon, flute, darbuka, timbales, zen drum, rabab, djembe, congos, matki, sitar, electric pads, bongos, and tabla, so ask what suits your event.
4. Do You Travel, and What Does Travel Cost?
If you are booking from outside the player’s home city, ask about travel. Some performers are limited to a region; others travel across the country. Ask what is covered, such as flights, lodging, and ground transport, and who pays for what. Kutchi Dholi is based in Houston and states nationwide availability.
5. How Do You Work With a DJ, Band, or Emcee?
Most events have other performers. A dhol player who has worked with DJs and bands will already know how to fit into a schedule and share the sound. Ask how they coordinate: who cues the entrance, how volume is balanced, and what happens if the schedule changes.
6. What Is the Plan for the Timeline and the Space?
A baraat needs different planning than a stage show. Ask what they need from you:
- Where the performance starts and ends
- How much room they need to move
- Whether the route or venue has restrictions
- How early they arrive to set up
7. What Are the Booking Terms and Backup Plan?
Get the details in writing.
- Deposit and payment schedule
- Cancellation and rescheduling terms
- What happens if the player is ill or cannot attend
- Overtime rates if the event runs long
These terms differ from performer to performer, so ask for them directly instead of assuming.
Red Flags to Watch For
- No video of recent events
- Vague answers about what is included
- Unwillingness to put terms in writing
- Pressure to pay in full immediately
